The Gold Coast Band in Boynton Beach is a municipal community band proudly supported by the City of Boynton Beach, Florida.  The Gold Coast Band was started in 1976 when James Buffan, and his wife, Lee, moved to the area from Niagara Falls, N.Y. in 1975. He had been the Director of Music for public schools in the city and also had served on the faculty of Niagara University. He felt that the Boynton Beach area needed a focal point for culture in the community. Organization and administration were really his strong points.

The Gold Coast Band started with 15 members, mostly seasonal residents, and expanded through the years to 60. This year under the baton of maestro Ken Wilbanks, membership has grown to approximately 110. As the concert season lengthened, many of the band members extended their winter stays in South Florida.  Dr. Buffan, a retired band director who nurtured a local group of musicians into a community band, passed away suddenly in April of 1992 while conducting a rehearsal of the band.  CLICK HERE for early articles/photos

The Gold Coast Band has had only four conductors.  Dr. James Buffan (1976-1991), DeVere Fader (1991-2000), James Fader (2000-2015) and it’s current director, Ken Wilbanks (2015-present).

The Gold Coast Band, considered one of the finest Community Bands in Florida just finished its best season yet under the artistic direction of Ken Wilbanks.  Attendance has soared to sellout crowds this season, and the level of musicianship and performance is at its highest point ever.

The Gold Coast Band performs two concerts in the fall and 2 concerts in the spring.  The band performs music at the highest level on music lists.  The band is based at the Civic Center in Boynton Beach, Florida and meets each Thursday night from 7-9pm.  Concerts are now held in the Liberal Arts Magnet Boynton Beach High School.  Guest conductors, soloists and vocalist are featured at every concert.

Our vocalist, Dr. Donna Singer, is a Grammy nominated vocalist with training from Julliard School of Music. The band focuses on making each concert an enjoyable experience for the audience and musicians, as well as our professional musicians in the group.

The Gold Coast Band has modernized its performances by the use of audio-visual presentations, which has been a big hit with the audiences.  It has also increased audience attendance.  The band performs a mixture of band music classics, pop music, marches and current music that is reflective of today’s society.  The Gold Coast Band believes in promoting each musician either through their musicianship or promoting musical compositions by the members or guest composers.

This year we were fortunate to have two “world premieres” from award winning composers as well as celebrating our 40th year anniversary featuring world class conductors, composers, vocalist and even our Mayor Steven B. Grant at our end of the year concert.

Ken’s bands have consistently received superior ratings at the District, Area and State level as well as “Grand Champion Band” during competitions. He was a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Band Masters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and Kappa Kappa Psi as well as a guest conductor & clinician throughout the South even to this day. Ken is also a member of ASCAP.

After a successful career in teaching High School Band, Ken went on to Corporate America and became a National Leader in the Estate Planning Financial Field with many National Awards and certifications and retired in 2007. Now, retired in South Florida, Ken is enjoying what he calls “Paradise”. He has returned to his roots in music by directing the Gold Coast Band, performing with the Broward Symphonic Band and is currently composing & conducting music on the National level as well as serving as a clinician to many bands throughout the southern United States.

The Gold Coast Band is a proud member of the Association of Concert Bands (ACB).
